It is significant that the MontyBaby Equity Co-op is choosing to mount Jim Garrard's PEGGY'S SONG at The Red Sandcastle Theatre. Jim Garrard was one of the founding fathers of Theatre Passe Muraille 45 years ago. He was pondering what to call a potential theatre company of his own when "I looked up and saw the lady in my life was reading Marcel Ayme's famous story Le passe muraille (The Walker Through Walls)" and it struck him as having the qualities he dreamt of in a theatre.
Garrard lost his original draft and personal copy of PEGGY'S SONG to a fire in 2005. The staging of this play is a phoenix in more ways than one. The unravelling of a mystery by the classic dame and detective is couched in the age old story of seduction. This play is a reminder of what makes theatre work; and how great theatre teaches us about human understanding through story, not instruction.
The Red Sandcastle Theatre brings original and unpublished works by new and seasoned Canadian playwrights to the stage. The Red Sandcastle Theatre is not "passing through walls" per say, but is providing a very real and important need to house Canadian theatre within non-political walls. The Red Sandcastle Theatre reminds us that the artist is the best sheppard of artistic creation and expression. And most importantly, that in theatre, Anything Is Possible.
