The Bench Theatre Initiative aims to be a hospitable, gracious, trust-risking theatre initiative prioritizing the poor and excluded, particularly those who are or have been street-involved. The Bench supports artists working in intentional community with other social and artistic initiatives, and aims to be an aesthetically compelling and credible voice in Canadian theatre, engaging this community as artistic equals.
Sanctuary began in 1985 as an R & B band called Red Rain that was aiming to connect with excluded people in the downtown Toronto area. It currently runs two weekly meals, a health clinic, NA and AA meetings, arts and games drop-ins, a women's program, a church and a drama program. Besides the many programs that Sanctuary offers, their primary work is often simply walking around the downtown core, connecting with people who are living on the streets, and offering resources and friendship to marginalized people.
