Stage Door News
From entranced boy at his father’s theatre to bringing Shakespeare to the White House, through
death and divorce, Oscar Wilde and Harvey Fierstein, falling off the stage and falling in love, Richard Sheridan Willis recounts the passions and absurdities of one actor’s life.
Strolling Player is a kaleidoscope of classical drama and highly personal stories from theatre TV and film, framed by the memory of a small boy at his father’s seaside theatre, watching a play, entranced...and remembering his future.
COMPASS Theatre Productions, in collaboration with Red Sandcastle Theatre, is thrilled to present Richard Sheridan Willis, the ‘Strolling Player’ on 1st and 2nd of december at 8pm.
Richard’s one-man Strolling Player is a deeply personal journey through theatrical stories and classical speeches with originally composed music by Dougal Rose. He is directed by Robert Richmond who has directed at the Folger Theatre, Washington DC; Aquila Theatre, NYC; Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and whose Off-Broadway production of Comedy of Errors was brought to La Jolla Playhouse by Des McAnuff. Strolling Player first was seen in March at the Brantford Art Gallery and Norfolk Arts Centre and at Factory 163, Stratford Ontario in August.
Born in Stratford-upon-Avon on purpose, Richard was given the Complete Works of Shakespeare as a christening present and dedicated to the theatre by his actor-director parents. He was on stage from the age of six, and after a TV and film career as a child actor, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. From London’s West End to Off-Broadway and the White House, he has performed worldwide; Shakespeare, Ibsen and Wilde, through to Morris Panych, David Mamet and Tom Stoppard.
Television appearances include Dr. Who, Law & Order, Nikita, Lost Girl and Flashpoint. Love brought him to Canada where he married Canadian writer, Heidi Reimer . He performed most recently in the Toronto Production of The Railway Children, Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady at The Summer Theatre of New Canaan, and Herakles at the Michael Cacoyannis Centre in Athens. Richard’s future productions include an appearance in the new History Channel series Dangerous Persuasions, the lead in a short film, Dreadful Sorry, Henry V at the Folger Theatre, Washington DC, and the Clockmaker at the Sudbury Arts Centre, all in 2013.
