Stage Door News
“It’s child’s play!” is an expression to indicate that a task is easily accomplished. But for Klaus and Lucas, life is not really a game. Refusing to indulge in human feelings, the 10-year-old twins embark on a series of exercises to harden and toughen mind and body, and record their progress in a cold, subjective manner. Abandoned to the care of their grandmother, whom they call The Witch, in their own way they manage to escape the war raging round them.
A controversial book that dealt with profound moral questions by focusing on childish candour, Agota Kristof’s famous novel becomes, thanks to the skilful approach of director Catherine Vidal, the very theatre of the imagination of the young protagonists with a few pieces of string, a small stick and other ordinary objects creating a reality that is both rich and disturbing. And it is in that game that the young twins’ inventiveness is reflected in staging that, since its initial presentation in 2009, has met with great acclaim.
