Cast:
MORGAN: in his early fifties, a hard-working farmer in a small Ontario farming community in the early 1970’s. He is fiercely protective of his friend, Angus, and displays great kindness, patience and affection for him. On the other hand, he has a wickedly sarcastic sense of humour and his behaviour towards Miles, the young actor from Toronto, borders on sadistic (with underlying humour!).
ANGUS: in his early fifties is The Drawer Boy, a title given to him for his love of architectural drawings before the war. He has a simple, yet complex personality. Following a shrapnel incident in the war he is memory-impaired, but is strong, hard-working, has an incredible gift with numbers, and is caring, loveable and funny. He looks to Morgan for guidance and has total faith in him.
MILES: 22 years old, is a young eager actor from Toronto who is part of a group of theatre artists who are “going to find out about farming” by living with farmers and assembling what they learn into a play. Miles arrives at Morgan and Angus’ farm to ask if he can stay with them. Miles is required to portray many levels of his character as he works through the rural and urban culture-clash between him and the two men. He is ultimately the catalyst that brings about forgotten truths and lies, exposing secrets of love and tragedy.
THE AGES QUOTED ARE FOR REFERENCE. All three roles require strong actors who can portray the character convincingly and tell the story. What does 50 look like? I am looking for more maturity and ability than a specific age.
Please prepare a short (no more than two minutes) contemporary monologue. You should be prepared to read from the play. The script is on reserve at the Performing Arts Desk, 5th floor, Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street. Please bring a resume and headshot, a photocopy will do.
