Toronto Masque Theatre’s production of Fairest Isle celebrates the master of the Barque masque, Henry Purcell (1659 – 1695). Forming a history of his life as represented by his music, the evening will include pieces drawn from his work for the stage including The Fairy-Queen, Dido and Aeneas, King Arthur and The Indian Queen.
Under the artistic direction of Larry Beckwith, the production will have a strong focus on music but will contain all the elements that make masque such a compelling fusion of song, dance and theatre. Fairest Isle will be an excellent introduction to anyone new to masque and the breadth of the form can be seen by the outstanding individual performers we will be featuring:
Song: Lawrence Williford
Lauded for his luminous projection, lyrical sensitivity, and brilliant coloratura, tenor Lawrence Wiliford is in high demand in concert, opera, and recital repertoire. Critics have acclaimed him as an “amazing tenor” (Vancouver Sun) having “exceptional power throughout his range” (Boston Globe) and as a “phenomenal” and “matchless artist” (Globe & Mail).
Dance: Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière
An acclaimed dancer and choreographer in Montreal, Lacoursière specializes in dance of the Barque and Renaissance eras. She is the Artistic Director of Les Jardins Chorégraphiques and a member of Le Nouvel Opéra and this will be a rare chance for Toronto audiences to see her perform a series of solo pieces.
Theatre: Derek Boyes
An Associate Artist at Soulpepper and winner of their 2009 Artistic Director Award, Boyes has appeared in theatres across North America, including the Stratford and Shaw Festivals. He has directed all of Toronto Masque Theatre’s Purcell productions and will be performing in Fairest Isle along with Arlene Mazerolle.
