David Mirvish presents Outside the March’s award-winning production of TERMINUS. The brand new Off-Mirvish season takes flight with this “Spoken Word Irish Rap-Opera”, which just three months ago took the SummerWorks Festival by storm. A production that the Toronto Star called “an absolute must-see” and NOW Magazine described as “a phantasmagorical carnival – a visceral heart pumping experience that only great theatre can provide”, TERMINUS will be performed at The Royal Alexandra Theatre from November 21 to December 9, 2012 (media night is Friday, November 23 at 8 PM).
New on the scene and ever-inventive, Outside the March and Artistic Director Mitchell Cushman have been making a name for themselves this past year by inviting audiences into kindergarten classrooms (MR MARMALADE), and underground hacker spaces and corporate boardrooms (AGONY AND ECSTASY OF STEVE JOBS).
Now, with TERMINUS, the company invites audiences up onto the stage of one of North America’s oldest and most beautiful theatres, The Royal Alexandra. The audience, limited to 200 people a night, will be seated up onstage with the performers, setting the production against the balconies, chandeliers and ghosts of this historic theatre, which David Mirvish calls “the perfect stage for this show”.
The transfer to The Royal Alex happens on the heels of a packed-to-the-rafters run at the SummerWorks Festival, where it received the 2012 Prize for Best Production.
The entire TERMINUS team returns, including unparalleled performances by Maev Beaty, Ava Jane Markus, & Adam Wilson. The show is directed by Mitchell Cushman, with production design by Nick Blais and sound design by Richard Feren.
TERMINUS is a twisted tale chronicling one supernatural night in Dublin.
A mother with a heavy conscience races to save a near-stranger from an anarchic band of lesbians. A lonely woman finds comfort, sex and love in the “arms” of a disembodied soul. And a dangerous loner prowls Irish pubs, longing to belt Bette Midler pop songs for all to hear.
It’s a masterpiece script by one of Ireland’s most irreverent playwrights, Mark O’Rowe, originally performed at Dublin’s famed Abbey Theatre in 2007 and then touring around the world. But the show had yet to make it to Canada until Outside the March’s uniquely intimate production.
TERMINUS is the inaugural show in the Off-Mirvish Series, a new showcase for bold, original and daring theatrical works. Also in the series are: WITHOUT YOU, Anthony Rapp’s poignant play with music about love, loss and the creation the groundbreaking musical RENT; the Tony Award-winning CLYBOURNE PARK, a comedy about race and real estate performed by Studio 180 Theatre; and DANCING WITH RAGE, a hilarious new play by and starring the incomparable Mary Walsh.
