December 2012 - The artistic team behind 2012’s lauded Toronto Fringe hit, With Love and a Major Organ by Julia Lederer, returns on January 2nd for the Next Stage Theatre Festival. This sold-out hit had patrons lining up for hours for a chance to get tickets. It was Patron’s Pick, and was selected as one of the “Best of the Fringe” series at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. With Love and a Major Organ also won NOW Magazine’s Wrap-UP for Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Direction, and Outstanding Production. It is also the only 2012 Fringe show in this years’ Next Stage Theatre Festival.
A combination of veteran and up-and-coming artists reprise their roles in this comedy about pheromones, fate, and the TTC. Julia Lederer (36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls) plays Anabel, who gives her heart to a man she meets on the subway. Robin Archer (Santaland Diaries) is George, a man on the run who keeps getting distracted by romantic comedies. Mona, played by multi-Dora Award winner Martha Ross (The Story, More Fine Girls), resorts to therapy from GoogleShrink, forcing herself to speed date and taking in a stranger who appears at her door clad in purple plaid, searching for the heart she gave away. The creative team is rounded out by designer Melanie McNeill (VideoCaberet), and director Andrew Lamb (My Mother’s Jewish Lesbian Wiccan Wedding).
Julia Lederer is a staple of Toronto’s indie theatre scene, known both as a writer and performer. Her witty, thoughtful and poetic dialogue has garnered significant praise, and made her one of the most exciting and unique emerging artists in Toronto. At the 2012 Fringe, NOW Magazine’s Glenn Sumi wrote, “Keep your eye on Lederer, who’s got huge potential.” Of With Love and a Major Organ, Steve Fisher (The Torontoist) wrote, “Lederer’s lyrical flights of fancy...are the revelation here.”. Lederer spent last year studying acting in New York, at HB Studio, Primary Stages, and the Upright Citizens Brigade, and returned to Toronto in May.
“I am excited to be working with such talented and passionate artists,” Lederer notes. “I feel very fortunate to have received such a wonderful reception at the Toronto Fringe, and can’t wait to share With Love and a Major Organ with a larger audience as part of Next Stage.”
