Body 13 is a quintessential Canadian love story — or, more rightly, three of them — mixing diverse tales of desire. It’s an erotic, exotic exploration of forbidden love and the gulfs between cultures in Canadian society.
In 2012, Kitchener’s MT Space wowed critics and TPM audiences alike, with their compelling production of The Last 15 Seconds. Robert Crew of the Toronto Star called it “a pulsating, unforgettable piece of theatre that uses dance, video and vocalization to stunning effect.” MT Space now returns to TPM with their signature style, as this unique, dynamic collective presents its new work, Body 13.
MT Space is a multicultural theatre group developing contemporary Canadian works using an innovative ensemble approach. MT Space has won recognition and awards for its visually captivating method, where the movement of bodies is just as important as the words they speak. Artistic Director Andy McKim is delighted to have this unique group back at TPM. “This company has forged a powerful identity for themselves by developing plays in a collaborative style, anchored by the visionary leadership of Majdi Bou-Matar - who started the company in 2004. In the intervening years he has managed to create a company that is at the forefront of Canadian theatre because of their dynamic inter-disciplinary plays with inter-cultural casts. Their hallmark has been finding stories that resonate with a broad audience.”
Body 13 is the first of three productions for TPM’s winter season: Theater Beyond Borders. This winter season takes us out of our comfort zone to engage with plays that challenge and stretch perceptions. Following Body 13, our Theatre Beyond Borders season continues with Shakespeare’s Nigga a look into the minds of both Othello and Titus Andronicus’ Aaron as they confront their creator. Presented by Obsidian in association with Theatre Passe Muraille, it runs from February 2 to 23. Concluding our winter season is Atomic Vaudeville’s comic play Legoland, the prequel to the smash hit Ride The Cyclone. Employing Jacob Richmond’s now familiar writing, it follows the weird and hilarious adventures of a brother and sister team who escape boarding school, by using the money they make selling their prescription drugs, in order to go on a cross continent road trip. It runs March 21 to April 13.
