Young People’s Theatre is thrilled to present the Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) production of The Cat Came Back. Set in a Chautauqua tent atmosphere, this co-creation by the remarkable trio of Fred Penner, Jay Brazeau and Kim Selody opens on Thursday, February 28 and runs to March 16, 2013 with daily family performances during March Break.
Based on the song by Harry S. Miller that Fred made universally famous, this fanciful tale explores conflicting wishes – wanting a mischievous cat to go away versus wishing the affectionate feline would come back. In the play, a merry band of musicians help their grumpy neighbour Mr. Johnson and his curious cat negotiate a way to live together. Fantastical feline fun, first-rate performances and rockin' music make this a show you and your children won’t want to miss!
Directed by Kim Selody. Set, Costume Designer & Puppet Co-Designer: Linda Leon; Puppet Designer and Builder: Shawn Kettner; Musical Director: Paul O’Neil; Lighting Designer: Scott Henderson; Stage Manager: Carolyn Kutchyera.
Manitoba Theatre for Young People was originally founded in 1965 as Actors' Showcase (an amateur theatre troupe formed to showcase local talent) and incorporated in January of 1977. In 1982, it was reconstituted as a professional company devoted to theatre for young people by incoming Artistic Director Leslee Silverman. MTYP has grown to become one of the most respected professional theatre companies in Canada, for children or adults. The company has received numerous honours, including being the first English theatre to win the Canadian Institute of the Arts for Young Audiences Award in 1992. MTYP's 1994 production of Comet in Moominland was nominated for the prestigious Chalmers Award and in 1998, Old Friends received this same honour.
