TORONTO, March 15, 2012...The Theatre Lab is pleased to announce their upcoming production of SMOTHER, opening at Unit 102 Studio Theatre on Thursday March 29, 2012. SMOTHER is a devised creation based on the short by director Omar Hady (Homegrown, Summerworks '10). The ensemble consists of Alexandra Baczynskyj (Last Year's Model), Rory de Brouwer (Kadozuke Kollektif), Aaron Rothermund (The Tennessee Williams Project) & Lea Russell (Sylvia, Alumnae Theatre) - with Musical Direction by Bob Wiseman (Actionable / Blue Rodeo).
Set in an archaic time, SMOTHER is a story about a villager named Mitri who longs for a family of his own, but instead is burdened by his old miserable mother - Mama Beata. Having her husband drop dead as she was giving birth, she was left alone to reconcile his debts. To her, the cost of Baby Mitri was too great - and because of this, she would always remind her son of this great sacrifice she was forced to make. This guilt weighed heavy on Mitri, who felt obligated not to pursue a family of his own, but rather to spend his life caring for his mother. But much to her disappointment, Mitri gets himself into the trouble of falling in love.
The Theatre Lab took a different approach when working on our sixth production. The creative team and the ensemble worked together to create a mosaic of movement, text and song. We explored through the techniques of Commedia Dell'Arte and Bouffon with Dan Watson (Ahuri Theatre) as well as the Laban Efforts. We started with a short story, and went from there.
We are two weeks away from opening our sixth production, SMOTHER, and we are thrilled to be presenting this piece to our community. Please find all the necessary information below, and make your ticket reservations by emailing info@theatrelab.ca
