TORONTO – PANFISH PRODUCTIONS is set to make a splash on the Toronto theatre scene with its debut production of Norm Foster’s classic Canadian play The Melville Boys at Alumnae Studio Theatre Apr 12-28!
Old wounds and resentments bubble to the surface along with new sexual desires in this story of two pairs of siblings whose agendas and perspectives are changed dramatically following a chance meeting out on a lake in the woods. Terminally ill Lee Melville wants his younger brother to grow up and settle down before he dies. Owen doesn’t believe Lee’s ever going to die and just wants him to loosen up while they’re away from their families. When aspiring actress and party girl Loretta stumbles into their cabin, Owen thinks he’s found the perfect escape from the life his brother has planned for him, but her repressed and tortured sister Mary has other ideas. It’s a surprisingly funny and unsentimental show that has endeared audiences across Canada and around the world for nearly 30 years, and earned the Los Angeles Critics Drama-League Award in 1988.
This production of The Melville Boys will be directed by David Schaap, who brings with him 35 years of experience working on major musicals and dramas in New York, Toronto, Montreal, and South Florida. Artistic Producer Yehuda Fisher, an emerging force in the local theatre and film scenes, helms the show.
PANFISH is the brainchild of Toronto actor and poet Yehuda Fisher. It’s a new company whose goal is to partner emerging talent with established artists and producers in order to help develop the next generation of leaders in Toronto’s theatre community. Mentors currently working with PANFISH are Ron Leach (Mentor Producer), Brian Levy (Mentor Casting Director), and Sherry Roher (Mentor Stage Manager) – they bring a combined 65 years’ worth of experience working in theatre to the company.
“We’re big proponents of building a community of artists that grow and develop together, and create opportunities for other people to grow and develop with us,” Fisher says.
