Toronto, ON - April 23, 2012: Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced that the 2011/2012 Soulpepper Academy will present their original collective creation, Dirt, from May 18 to May 26 at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. This special presentation concludes the Academy's rigorous year of training.
The 2011/2012 Soulpepper Academy is Akosua Amo-Adem, Qasim Khan, Sarah Koehn, Courtney Lancaster, Justin Many Fingers, Hannah Miller, Paolo Santalucia and Daniel Williston. As an ensemble they have taken on dirt not only as a provocation but as an actual substance which fills the theatre.
Dirt is the culmination of the Academy's diverse theatrical training and showcases their strengths as young, emerging Canadian artists. Through contemporary urban stories, provocative and humorous movement pieces, and use of multimedia technology, the Academy digs deep into how dirt is ubiquitous, from grime under fingernails to dark, dirty secrets.
Dirt is directed by Leah Cherniak with assistant director Adam Paolozza. Designs are by Academy alumni Ken MacKenzie and Lorenzo Savoini. Dirt previews on May 18, opens on May 23 and runs until May 26. Tickets are $20 (plus service charge) and are available by calling the Young Centre box office at 416.866.8666 or by visiting soulpepper.ca. Soulpepper Theatre Company is located at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, 55 Mill Street, Building 49, in the Distillery Historic District.
This is the third Academy class to graduate from Soulpepper's performance residency. Academy members are chosen through a coast-to-coast audition process. Last year a generous donation from the Michael & Karen Vukets Family Foundation was made to help support the Soulpepper Academy from 2011-2013. The Academy is also supported by the Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation, RBC Foundation, Hal Jackman Foundation and individual donors through Soulpepper's Soul Circle Mentors program.
