Toronto, April 26, 2012 - Fresh Herbs at Tarragon is the umbrella formation for all creative development programs for young people at Tarragon, including the Young Playwrights Unit (YPU), Spring Training Project (STP) and other opportunities and training for aspiring theatre-creators. Rehearsal Hall is a mini-festival by Fresh Herbs at Tarragon that invites audiences to experience the sum of this season's creative explorations from May 25-27. All events take place at the Tarragon Near Studio, 30 Bridgman Avenue. Admission is pay-what-you-can. Reserve in advance with the Tarragon box office at 416-531-18267 or just show up the door.
Rehearsal Hall programming includes:
Presentations of five new 10-minute plays written by Tarragon's Young Playwrights Unit and performed by members of its Spring Training Project for the fifth consecutive year. The plays are: Art of Work by Julian Lee; Home by Rebecca Tran; Impetuous by Calyx-Chip Passailaigue; Running, or Still Being There by Mohamad Abuali and Stuck by Tia Anderson-Hudson.
A professional staged reading of The Education of Jamie Stewart by Lyndsey Bourne of Vancouver BC, winner of the 2012 Under 20 for Under 20 Playwriting Competition, generously supported by the K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation.
A public conversation with the teen performers of Concord Floral, a new piece by Jordan Tannahill (current member of the Tarragon Playwrights Unit and past winner of the Under 20 for Under 20 Playwriting Competition). This follows a formal presentation of Concord Floral at Canadian Stage's Festival of Ideas and Creation on May 12. The cast of Concord Floral includes members of Tarragon's STP. Tarragon's Director of Education and Outreach, Erin Brubacher, is Dramaturge for the project.
More on Fresh Herbs at Tarragon:
For over 20 years, the Spring Training Project has been shaping artists and active members of the theatre community. Participants work with diverse professionals while collaborating with one another. Members of this year's STP group had the opportunity to work with artists Erin Brubacher, Ravi Jain, Kristina Nicoll, Ngozi Paul and Cara Spooner during a five-day intensive over the March Break. The 2011-2012 Young Playwrights Unit began meeting in October, under the guidance of professional playwright and dramaturg Paula Wing.
Fresh Herbs builds upon Tarragon's company history of work with young people, exposing them to as much work and as many areas as possible to best support their curiosity and passion. And it is a two-way street as Tarragon artists continue to learn and gain new perspectives from the youth participants about what theatre can be.
These projects are made possible, in part, by the Youth Theatre Training Program of Theatre Ontario, funded by the Ontario Arts Council.
