Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, April 27, 2012 . . . A Man and Some Women, the bold portrayal of family dynamics from the writer of The Stepmother and Rutherford & Son, previews today at the Court House Theatre.
Continuing its tradition of “archaeological” programming, the Shaw Festival presents A Man and Some Women by Githa Sowerby. Previously unpublished and rarely-produced, Sowerby’s earlier plays Rutherford and Son and The Stepmother received both critical and audience acclaim when produced at The Shaw in 2004 and 2008. As always, Ms. Sowerby tackles the issues of marriage and money and the tensions that lie between the two — this time adding the extra wrinkle of two dependent sisters and a potential romantic interest. Told from a woman’s point-of-view, the story takes some surprising turns.
Directed by Alisa Palmer, the Shaw Festival’s production of A Man and Some Women features Graeme Somerville as Richard Shannon, Marla McLean as Jessica Hendred, Sharry Flett as Elizabeth Shannon, Kate Hennig as Rose Shannon and Jenny L. Wright as Hilda Shannon, with Ijeoma Emesowum and Jordan Hilliker.
Richard Shannon longs to leave his business to take up a post as a scientific advisor in Brazil. Bound by duty, money and obligation, he remains instead to support his wife, two unmarried sisters and a young boy-cousin left to him under a cloud of dubious circumstances. Thankfully, he has one family member he can count on — his cousin Jessica, a young woman whose independence and unconventional ideas about relationships offer him the opportunity of “escape”.
Production credits for A Man and Some Women include set and costume design by Leslie Frankish, lighting design by Louise Guinand, with music direction and composition by Allen Cole. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Dora Tomassi and Assistant Stage Manager Rob Middleton.
A Man and Some Women begins preview performances Friday, April 27, opens Thursday, May 24 and plays in repertory until Saturday, September 22. The Shaw Festival’s 2012 season began April 10, 2012, runs until October 28, 2012 and proudly features 11 productions presented on the Festival’s four Niagara-on-the-Lake stages.
