TORONTO, ON… Managing Director Sara Meurling and Artistic Director Ken Gass are pleased to announce Factory Theatre’s 43rd season of all-Canadian contemporary theatre in Toronto. “Imagination, transformation, longing and laughter: stories of who we are, who we are not and who we want to be,” says Gass, “This is a season where bold new ideas and the theatrical imagination intersect. We have provocative ideas and compelling images from some of Canada’s most powerful playwrights in the new works of Nina Lee Aquino, Michel Marc Bouchard, Judith Thompson and George F. Walker. As well, Factory Theatre is proud to announce a co-production with Toronto’s Acting Up Stage Company with the Toronto premiere of a Vancouver hit by Bill Richardson and Veda Hille.” Subscriptions range from $37 to $185 – with special bonus offers for returning subscribers who renew before June 30. Call the box office at (416) 504-9971 or visit in person during box office hours at 125 Bathurst Street, Toronto. Factory Theatre’s 2012/13 season is sponsored by BMO Financial Group. Launching the season, November 3 – December 2, 2012 (previews November 3 – 7, opens November 8), is Tom and the Coyote, the English-language Premiere by Michel Marc Bouchard, translated by Linda Gaboriau and directed by Eda Holmes. Tom’s lover has died. At the family farm, a mother, a brother, a lover and a friend mourn - the collision of grief, lust and lies shatters the lives they have been living. Michel Marc Bouchard is one of the most nationally and internationally-acclaimed Canadian artists and is the author of more than 20 plays which have earned him numerous awards in Quebec, across Canada and worldwide, including the Governor General’s, Soiree de Masques, Dora Mavor Moore and Chalmers Awards. Bouchard is an Officer of the Order of Canada. This is the third English-language Premiere of Bouchard’s work to be produced at Factory Theatre.
January 26 - February 24, 2013, in Factory’s Mainspace Theatre (previews January 26 – 30, opening January 31) - Every Letter Counts by Nina Lee Aquino and directed by Nigel Shawn Williams, is a World Premiere. In her search for inspiration, Bunny looks back at the legacy of her uncle, Filipino political and cultural icon Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, and discovers he has given her more than the power of words. He has given her the power to shape her own destiny. Nina Lee Aquino is a Filipina-Canadian playwright, director, dramaturge, and actor. She was a founding member and Artistic Director of fu-GEN Asian-Canadian Theatre Company and is currently Artistic Director of Cahoots Theatre Company. Aquino is a multiple award-winner (Ken McDougall Award, the John Hirsch Prize, Dora Mavor Moore Award) and has been an Associate Artist of Factory Theatre for three years. Every Letter Counts was developed through Factory Theatre’s Play Development Program and is the first Factory production of one of Nina Lee Aquino’s plays.
February 2 – March 3, 2013, in Factory’s Studio Theatre (previews February 2 - 6, opens February 7) – Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata, by Bill Richardson and Veda Hille, is directed by Amiel Gladstone and co-produced with Acting Up Stage. This hilarious song cycle is a musical litany of our needs, wants and what we share online - stuffed penguins, decapitated dolls and love for sale. Composer Veda Hille and the CBC’s Bill Richardson enchant us with what humanity has to offer. Factory Theatre and Acting Up Stage co-produce the 2011 Vancouver hit in a Toronto Premiere production.
March 9 – April 7, 2013 (previews March 9 – 13, opens March 14) - Dead Metaphor is a Canadian Premiere written and directed by George F. Walker. In this dark comedy, Dean is back from Afghanistan, out-of-work as a sniper and looking to transfer his job skills. It’s a darkly hilarious story about just what we will do to and for our families. George F. Walker is one of Canada's most prolific, widely produced and published playwrights. His prizes and awards include nine Chalmers, five Doras, and three Governor General’s. He also writes extensively for television and radio. Walker is the recipient of the Order of Canada. Many of George F. Walker’s plays have premiered at Factory Theatre over the last 40 years, most recently And So It Goes in 2010.
April 30 – May 26, 2013 (previews April 30 – May 5, opens May 7) - Watching Glory Die, written and performed by Judith Thompson and directed by David Storch, has its World Premiere. This one woman show created and performed by Thompson is a powerful tour-de-force - a chilling yet heartbreaking story of three women inextricably bound by a tragic death. Judith Thompson is one of Canada’s most highly regarded playwrights, the author of numerous works for the stage and has won awards including the Governor General’s Literary Award, multiple Chalmers, the Walter Carson and Susan Blackburn Prizes as well as Dora Mavor Moore Awards. She has written many radio plays and adapted her work for film. Thompson is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
