Crash is a portrait of a survivor grappling with loss but sustained by love. Crash takes place in the present, at the memorial of the girl’s father; the loss of whom triggers long suppressed memories of an unresolved crime. The story offers the audience an opportunity to understand the unending repercussions of an emotional trauma. Crash examines the nature of memory and grief, and the search for meaning in the face of injustice.
The 2012 winter season at TPM sees a duo of powerful female voices take the stage, first Prisoner of Tehran by Marina Nemat and now Crash by Pamela Sinha. Artistic Director Andy McKim spoke of the nature of the productions and the presence of the powerful female on the TPM stage. “I can assure you there is no quota system at work here at TPM. What is at work is our mission to produce plays that speak to our times, that present marginal views, that challenge conventional thinking, that force us to re-examine ourselves. These two plays do that.”
A powerful piece about the unraveling of identity and the resilience f the human spirit, Crash is written and performed by Pamela Sinha and directed by Alan Dilworth. Although this is Pamela’s first time as a playwright, she is an established Canadian artist in theatre, film and television. Crash was developed in part during the BUZZ festival last year and TPM is excited to see Pamela’s work on its stage. Pamela is a published short-story writer (Dropped Threads/Random House Canada) and her acting credits include The Penelopiad, Brothel #9 (dora nomination), ER and HBO’s Live From Baghdad. Alan is a celebrated director, who is constantly working across the country; most recently at The Globe Theatre, The Belfry, ATP, Tarragon, and of course Theatre Passe Muraille with last season’s hit The Middle Place.
Crash is presented in the TPM Backspace and is an exciting deviation from recent TPM norms, transforming the space by employing the use of elaborate technical elements. The design team includes, Kimberly Purtell (lighting/set), Debashis Sinha (sound), Cameron Davis (video), Monica Dotter (movement coach), and Rubena Sinha (Mahadevi coach). Stage manager Kat Chin, assistant director Rain Chan, and production assistant Jeny Nikolova round out the production team.
Crash provides a powerful insight into the life of a survivor and should not be missed.
