Internationally renowned, award-winning performance company, Mammalian Diving Reflex is seeking applications for some INSTANT SWAG EMPLOYMENT: a youth wing coordinator. The company’s youth wing, the Young Mammals, was launched in 2011 to develop, facilitate and formalize our work with youth in Toronto and abroad. This position is funded for 28 hours per week at $15/hour by the Metcalf Foundation. Hours may increase to full-time if additional funds are secured (by you, you genius!). This will be a 1 year contract, commencing in summer 2012, with the possibility of renewal.
INSTANT SWAG EMPLOYMENT demands an insanely complicated hybrid of responsibilities and expertise, requiring someone with a wicked sense of humour who wants to work with a bunch of teens who are high on their own hormones; knows what a boolean operator looks like; loves - and we mean LOVES - the sheer exhilaration of writing bitchin’ grants; has a fetish for spreadsheets and will use them to organize anything and everything; has to be told to take a break; prefers to eat in front of the computer; is addicted to social media; can step on stage and dance in front of an audience; likes to fancy themselves a bit of a graphic artist; considers fundraising an artistic project; and has a pathological desire to be considered the best in the universe. If this sounds like you then: 1. Find yourself a good therapist (You’re sick! You’re sick!) and, 2. Send us your CV. In that order.
Paranoid critical theory-heads need not apply. Though we still love you.
We welcome applicants from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. Applicants may have knowledge of fields including: the arts, education, youth work, urban planning, ethnography, social work, the tango, business, activism, non-profits, social policy, cultural policy, relational aesthetics, grounded theory, participatory action research and how to whip up a mean grilled cheese and/or (virgin) daiquiri.
The responsibilities of the Young Mammals Coordinator may include, but are not limited to: grant research, writing and budgeting; fundraising and securing new partners/donors for the wing; overseeing the strategic growth of the wing so that it is self-sustaining when funding expires in 2014; researching and co-writing articles about Mammalian’s approach to working with youth; developing programs for youth in collaboration with core staff; coordinating projects for youth as they are developed; lobbying Rob Ford; and regularly reporting on youth wing developments to Mammalian’s Director and Producers.
We understand the hours and pay are not massive, but our youth work is rapidly expanding into the international performing arts market and we anticipate that the growth of the wing will be strong. This will be an opportunity to develop and shape an exciting aspect of the company and, if all goes well, share in the various benefits of that growth.
Qualifications
The Young Mammals Coordinator will have some knowledge and experience/skills in most of these areas:
-youth arts programming
-artistic social practice/relational aesthetics
-advanced research and writing
-fundraising
-grant writing
-budgeting/financial management
-strategic planning
-project coordination
-working with non-profits/small organizations

-an understanding of and agreement with the Mammalian Protocol for Collaborating with Children and Young People. Copies of the protocol can be downloaded here:

Please submit a CV with a cover letter including everything we need to know and a couple of fart jokes. All candidates are required to include a piece of original research/writing with their application on any topic, though ideally related to youth, arts, culture, policy or social issues, etc. A handful of candidates selected from the application process will be invited to spend time with Mammalian's teen collaborators in June 2012...so maybe do a few push-ups first. Candidates of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are super enthusiastically encouraged to apply.
Good Luck.
