Toronto, ON (May 15, 2012) – Toronto Festival of Clowns announces a change to its 2012 festival line-up with the addition of Death and Other Discomforts: A Triple Bill. For two performances only, previously announced Bleed will be paired with two thrilling new works, Preacher Man and Baby. Toronto’s Bouffon King, Adam Lazarus, directs all three shows in the triple bill. Death and Other Discomforts: A Triple Bill replaces the previously announced production of Yorkville Bitches take on AfFORDability.
Preacher Man - Minnesota
What happens after we die? Preacher Man knows, and has been looking forward to his date with the electric chair for twenty years. He spends his last words on a sermon about his upbringing in rural Virginia, the importance of proper manners, lawn mower mechanics, forgiveness, and justice.
Preacher Man is performed and created by National Theatre School of Canada student, Jesse LaVercombe. Entering his third year in the acting program, where he has played such roles as Richard (Richard III), Macduff (Macbeth), and Friend/Father (As Five Years Pass). Later this summer Jesse will appear in Protestival at Buddies in Bad Times and will be taking Preacher Man to New Brunswick for a double-bill run with fellow NTS playwright Step Taylor’s Jesus Again.
Baby - Toronto
Baby just wants what every kid wants: a nice family, a nice neighbourhood and an all around nice life, and he’ll do anything to get it. Anything. Baby is ready to start again. No holes barred.
Stephen Jackman-Torkoff first created and performed Baby this past year at the National Theatre School of Canada, where he is a student of the acting program. Credits at NTS include: As Five Years Pass, Macbeth, The Brothers Karamazov, Closer, The Glass Menagerie, and Three Sisters. He has also appeared in Rent, Les Miserables (Steppin’ Out Theatrical Productions) and Protestival (Theatre Passe Muraille).
Bleed - Toronto
Today, something about Norman is off. Today, he didn’t go to work. Today, he stayed home. Now he is beginning to bleed. Bleed, created and directed by Adam Lazarus, was first performed at this year’s Rhubarb Festival, where it was a huge hit.
Bleed is performed by Phil Luzi, host of The Sal and Sandy Show, Toronto’s most outrageous monthly comedy room with Sandra Battaglini at The Underground Comedy Club. He is also a member of Toronto’s most shameless troupe of musical satirists, The Specials. Theatre credits include: Michael Tremblay’s Hosanna, the title role in Othello (Theatre Passe Muraille), Nino in a Canadian tour of Mambo Italiano, and Tony in Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding (The Second City, Toronto).
Adam Lazarus, Festival co-founder and award-winning actor, directs all three shows in Death and Other Discomforts: A Triple Bill. He is a sessional instructor at The National Theatre School of Canada and the University of Toronto. Notable credits include directing the Solo Show Project at NTS (2009-12); [boxhead] (Crow’s Theatre/Mamalian Diving Reflex); Wonderland (SummerWorks Spotlight Award for Outstanding Performance); Le Fain de Partie (Waves Festival/Luminato); Appetite (Volcano/Theatre Passe Muraille/Exchange Rate Collective); The Lupe Trilogy (QuipTake).
The seventh annual festival, running from May 31 to June 3rd, 2012 is filled with imaginative, outlandish, peculiar and hilarious shows. All performances will take place in Toronto’s Pia Bouman Studio Theatre in the heart of Queen West’s Arts District.
