Toronto - Volcano THEATRE, presents A Synonym for Love, a partnership with Toronto's celebrated Classical Music Consort that fuses past and present. With a modernized English libretto and a live Baroque orchestra playing period-specific instruments, three singers will seduce their audiences as they travel through the hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms and bars of the Gladstone Hotel exploring the inevitability - and the impossibility - of love. A Synonym for Love will run August 20 - 31, 2012 at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West.
In 1707, at age 21, a young genius named George Frideric Handel moved to Italy and composed a stunning cantata, experimenting with musical and dramatic forms. Clori, Tirsi e Fileno was never staged and, when the composer died, it was thought lost to history. 250 years later, a single complete copy was discovered in Germany. This year, Volcano will reimagine Handel's love-triangle for Toronto audiences and present its fully-staged Canadian premiere at the iconic Gladstone Hotel
In Volcano Theatre's daring version, three guests are staying at the historic Gladstone Hotel in Toronto - one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the city. A woman is at the bar ordering drinks. A man is waiting at a table for her return. She looks at him, and sings of her love. Another woman - who has just checked in, and who also happens to be the first woman's lover - enters. She sees the couple, and enraged, storms out, and up to her room. This is the beginning of the love triangle.
A Synonym for Love is directed by Ross Manson, musical direction by Ashiq Aziz, librettist Deborah Pearson, scenic designer Julie Fox, lighting designer Rebecca Picherack with singers Emily Atkinson (Soprano), Scott Belluz (Counter Tenor) and Tracy Smith Bessette (Soprano) and featuring Orchestra members of The Classical Music Consort.
