The revival of Jesus Christ Superstar directed by Des McAnuff went from its popular and critically acclaimed run at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival to via a run at the La Jolla Playhouse to Broadway with its Canadian cast largely intact. There it was nominated for Tony Awards in two categories: Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for American Josh Young as Judas.
In the first category it competed against revivals of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita directed by Michael Grandage, Stephen Sondheim’s Follies directed by Eris Schaeffer and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess directed by Diane Paulus which won the award. In the second category Young competed against Phillip Boykin in The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Michael Cerveris in Evita, David Alan Grier in The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and Phillip Boykin in Nice Work If You Can Get It who won the award.
The musical Once with music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and book by Enda Walsh won eight awards including Best Musical. Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris won one award, Best Play, and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman won two awards including Best Revival of a Play.
The 66th annual awards that celebrate excellence in the Broadway theatre were held at the Beacon Theatre on the Upper West Side.
