Celebrated Canadian actor Christopher Plummer has left an indelible mark on the Festival Theatre stage. Now he may be leaving his name on a street nearby.
With no discussion last night, city council approved a recommendation to begin the process of renaming the portion of the road in Upper Queens Park where the buses park as Christopher Plummer OC Street. (The OC stands for Order of Canada).
That was prompted by a recommendation from former city councillor Dave Gaffney, who suggested that Plummer is more than deserving of the honour for what he's done for the city over the past six decades.
“I would like to suggest that the city of Stratford name a street in recognition of the contributions Mr. Plummer OC has made to his art, to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and the prestige and recognition that he has and continues to bring to the City of Stratford,” wrote Gaffney in a recent letter to council.
Gaffney had first suggested a section of Queen Street between Lakeside Drive and Ballantyne Avenue, directly in front of the Festival Theatre, but staff had concerns that such a move would cause confusion for emergency responders, the public and visitors not familiar with the city. A change of address would also be required for one property owner on the block.
The section of road where the buses park, just southeast of the theatre, currently has no formal name.
Plummer would be in good company if that section is renamed in his honour.
Christopher Plummer OC Street would connect up with Richard Monette Way.
