Toronto, ON - June 18, 2012: Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced Soulpepper's summer season running in repertory from July to September, 2012, at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. Four classic plays by award-winning playwrights, featuring 32 members of Soulpepper's acting company, will be staged: David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow; Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys; Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Royal Comedians (Molière); and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
Opening in July is Mamet's scathing comedy about morality, loyalty and integrity in Hollywood, Speed-the-Plow. David Storch returns to direct Ari Cohen, Jordan Pettle and Sarah Wilson. Speed-the-Plow begins previews on July 5, opens on July 16 and runs until September 22.
Another American classic on stage this July is Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys, an insightful look into the lives of aging vaudeville duo Lewis and Clark, played by Kenneth Welsh and Eric Peterson and directed by Founding Member Ted Dykstra. The cast also includes: Oliver Dennis; John Jarvis; Jordan Pettle; Sarah Wilson; and Tim Ziegler; with Quancetia Hamilton in her Soulpepper debut. The Sunshine Boys begins previews on July 14, opens on July 26 and runs until September 22.
The Canadian premiere of The Royal Comedians (Molière) by Russian master Mikhail Bulgakov, translated by Carl and Ellendea Proffer, is directed for Soulpepper by László Marton. Set in 18th-century France, the play delves into the life of Molière, while subtly mirroring Bulgakov's own artistic repression in 20th-century Russia. The cast includes: Founding Members Michael Hanrahan, Stuart Hughes, Diego Matamoros and William Webster; with Raquel Duffy; Gregory Prest; and Michael Simpson; alongside Rong Fu and Harveen Sandhu in their Soulpepper debuts. The cast also includes the 2011-2012 Soulpepper Academy in their Soulpepper debuts: Akosua Amo-Adem; Qasim Khan; Sarah Koehn; Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster; Justin Many Fingers; Hannah Miller; Paolo Santalucia; and Daniel Williston. The Royal Comedians (Molière) begins previews on July 24, opens on August 7 and runs until September 21.
Also on stage this summer, Albert Schultz directs Arthur Miller's Tony Award-winning The Crucible, an exploration of the Salem, Mass. witch trials in 1692. The cast includes: Founding Members Michael Hanrahan, Stuart Hughes, Nancy Palk, William Webster and Joseph Ziegler; Akosua Amo-Adem; Derek Boyes; Oliver Dennis; Raquel Duffy; Patricia Fagan; Rong Fu; John Jarvis; Qasim Khan; Sarah Koehn; Courtney Ch’ng Lancaster; Justin Many Fingers; Hannah Miller; Gregory Prest; Mike Ross; Harveen Sandhu; Paolo Santalucia; Michael Simpson; Maria Vacratsis; and Daniel Williston. The Crucible begins previews on July 25, opens on August 9 and runs until September 22.
