Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, June 19, 2012 . . . Epifania Ognisanti di Parerga, Bernard Shaw’s superwoman, begins the search for her match in love and life tomorrow at the Shaw Festival’s Court House Theatre in The Millionairess. Director Blair Williams takes a contemporary approach to this enduring work and allows Shaw’s themes of capitalist individualism, political dictatorship and corporatism to resonate under a cloak of romance and comedy.
Immensely wealthy, spoiled and utterly unhappy, the recently single Eppy (Nicole Underhay) is “a woman who must always want something and always get it”. On the hunt for a new love, she sets her sights on Ahmed el Kabir (Kevin Hanchard), an Egyptian doctor, who is not the least impressed by her prosperity or overwhelmed by her powerful personality. With a happy ending on the horizon, complications arise in the form of two tests — he must turn £150 into £50,000 within six months; she must start with 35 pence, turn it into a healthy sum and support herself for six months. Determined to win her Doctor’s hand in marriage, Eppy sets out to live her life as a pauper and experiences an epiphany about true happiness along the way.
The world of The Millionairess comes to life with the support of Kevin Bundy as Julius Sagamore, and Martin Happer, Steven Sutcliffe, Robin Evan Willis, Mark Uhre, Michael Ball and Wendy Thatcher.
The Shaw’s production of The Millionairess is designed by Cameron Porteous, with lighting design by Louise Guinand and sound design by Dmitri Marine. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Allan Teichman and Assistant Stage Manager Annie McWhinnie.
The Millionairess begins preview performances Wednesday, June 20, opens Thursday, July 5 and plays in repertory until Saturday, October 6. Performances for June are over 90% sold out.
