TORONTO, ON (*June 7, 2012) – Harbourfront Centre is proud to announce it received a total of 13 nominations for the 33rd annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, announced June 5, 2012. Three nominations were garnered for World Stage 2012, which wrapped up a very successful season last month, as well as ten nominations for the globally-inspired dance programme, NextSteps.
These award nominations reaffirm Harbourfront Centre’s commitment to developing and supporting local arts and new works, with programmes such as Fresh Ground new work, HATCH and World Stage.

As Canada's foremost centre of contemporary culture, developing artists is at the core of what we do, says Tina Rasmussen, Director of Performing Arts. “It is a huge accomplishment and honour to be recognized by our peers in the work we are doing, not only about presenting the work but being part of the conceptualizing of the work, building the capacities of the artists and their companies, and being integral to bringing this work to a public."
In the general theatre division, the world premiere of Ajax & Little Iliad by Evan Webber was nominated in the Outstanding New Play category; Young Jean Lee Theatre Company provocative play, THE SHIPMENT, nominated for Outstanding Touring Production; and the world premiere of Everything Under the Moon, by Shary Boyle and Christine Fellows is nominated for Outstanding Production in the Theatre for Young Audiences division.
The whimsical shadow musical, Everything Under the Moon, created through Harbourfront Centre’s national commissioning programme Fresh Ground new works opened the World Stage 2012 season with sold-out shows. This year’s World Stage also closed with a Fresh Ground project, with the return of Dance Marathon. First staged at Harbourfront Centre in 2009, Dance Marathon has since gone on to tour internationally in six countries, including presentations in London and Melbourne, with phenomenal success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Other highlights included the anticipated return of The Wooster Group to Toronto since the 1980’s with sold-out performances of The Wooster Group’s Version of Tennessee Williams’ Vieux Carré. Ajax & Little Iliad, a co-production with Harbourfront Centre has already gone on to perform in Vancouver and will be staged at the Banff Centre, Theatre Grand in Kingston and Cork Midsummer Festival in Ireland. Paris1994/Gallery by The Dietrich Group was showcased to international presenters at World Stage, and as a result the show will be presented at The Esplanade in Singapore.
In the dance division, the following Harbourfront Centre’s NextSteps companies were nominated for the following Dora Awards: TransMigration, co-produced by Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and Planet IndigenUS for Outstanding Production and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition; Gadfly’s Klorofyl has three dance nominations for Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition; IZM presented by DanceWorks by Bboyizm nominated for Outstanding Production; Guillaume Côte for Fractals presented by ProArteDanza nominated for Outstanding Choreography; Juan Ogalla with Aguas/Waters - Celebrating 30 Years by Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company nominated for Outstanding Performance as well as Outstanding Sound Design/Composition; and Ann Southam for Rivers, by Toronto Dance Theatre for Outstanding Sound Design/Composition.
The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) announced 169 nominations for 212 eligible productions that opened between June 1, 2011 and May 22, 2012 for the 33rd annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards which honour excellence in the performing arts in Toronto.
For the 2011-2012 season, 116 producing companies registered eligible productions. A total of 35 Dora Awards plus the Silver Ticket Award, the Pauline McGibbon Award and the Audience Choice Award will be given out on Monday, June 25 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in the Bluma Appel Theatre.
