Toronto-based theatre company Suburban Beast is mounting Feral Child, a new play by twenty-four year old playwright/director Jordan Tannahill. It is a two-hander starring revered Croatian-Canadian actress Cynthia Ashperger and up-and-comer William Christopher Ellis.
The play is set in a contemporary Oshawa bedroom and focuses on a chance encounter between a housekeeper and her client’s teenage son that unearths a dark chapter from her past - the disappearance of her son during the Bosnian genocide. The play explores the ways in which we process buried trauma – particularly the kinds which lie buried within a family - and is deeply informed by Ashperger's own intimate knowledge of the conflict. Like Sarah Kane’s Blasted, the play explores the horrifying dimensions of the conflict through an intimate inter-personal exchange.
Feral Child marks the first professional production of a play in Canadian Stage's Berkeley Street Theatre Rehearsal Hall and the first in an ambitious line-up of new plays - all set in Toronto - to be mounted by Suburban Beast over the upcoming theatre season. The play was shortlisted for both the RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights Competition and the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s Post-Secondary New Play Competition.
Feral Child will be presented with the assistance of Canadian Stage, where Tannahill has been in residency as an RBC BASH Emerging Artist for the past year.
