BACKBEAT, the dramatic story of the Beatles' fledgling beginnings, was a rocking success at the Royal Alexandra Theatre this summer. The show, which began on July 20, 2012 and ended September 2, 2012, played 50 performances to over 70,000 theatregoers. That's a staggering 95% of capacity.
Written by Iain Softley and Stephen Jeffreys and directed by the multi-award-winning David Levaux, BACKBEAT is a startling, hyper-authentic and gritty look at the roots of the most famous rock 'n' roll band in the world. Toronto audiences appreciated the show's balance between crowd-pleasing musical performances and powerful drama.
Given Toronto's success, the show is now set to play Los Angeles in January 2013 and there is strong pressure for a Broadway transfer. Plans are also underway for a German-language production of the show to open in Hamburg, the setting for much of the play's action.
