In 2011, Theatre Passe Muraille received a 50th anniversary grant from the Metcalf Foundation. The result of which is the 2012 Theatre Passe Muraille Fall Season: Theatre Beyond Walls. Thanks in large part to the vision and financial support of the Metcalf Foundation, TPM has dreamed big and gone beyond the range of traditional theatrical activity to launch this program. The season officially kicks off on September 12 with the opening of the Queen West Project and The ToyBox followed by our Queen West Street Fest on September 15.
Part audio tour, part immersive dance experience, the Queen West Project takes one of multiple dancers and pairs them with individual audience members to travel down Queen West. The audience members are wearing headphones through which they hear a soundscape that incorporates text, music, and instructions so that a dance begins to take shape – one that only the audience can hear.
Devised in collaboration with youth from Eva’s Phoenix, the Queen West Project explores the area’s relationship to homelessness, mental health and regeneration. The Queen West Project is created by dance visionaries Deborah Pearson and Allison Cummings; the performers are Bill Coleman, Viv Moore, Jolyanne Langlois, Kevin Ormsby and Andrew Hartley. This is the first time in TPM’s history that they have commissioned a dance piece. You can follow the progress of this production on Tumblr or on the TPM Blog.
Step into The ToyBox, an essentially different kind of space, where young and old can PLAY. Whether you are in grade 5 or grade 50, The ToyBox engages the mind with art, technology, and other people by mixing creativity, interactivity and the special sauce that is: FUN. With toys like green screens, projectors, Lego and play-doh; The ToyBox gives you an opportunity to access your IMAGINATION.
The ToyBox begins its journey in the TPM Mainspace on September 12 where it remains until the 15 before moving on to City Hall where it will live from the 18-22. The ToyBox is developed and created by Beth Kates and Ben Chaisson—Playground studios. Learn more about The ToyBox and its developments on Flickr or the TPM Blog. This introductory arts event is completely free, so there is no excuse not to come out and play!
The Queen West Street Fest is set to take over Ryerson and Wolseley on September 15 in conjunction with the Queen West Arts Crawl. The street fest is the kick-off to the Theatre Beyond Walls Season, but in truth is an excuse to have a really big party with our friends & community! We're shutting the whole street down and inviting the entire neighbourhood to join us for live performances and music; spoken word and dance; puppetry and breakdancing workshops; plus local merchants and food vendors. The event runs from 11:00am-5:00pm and features: The Sunparlour Players, Whitney Rose, The Supernaturalz Crew, Tommy Luther (Associate Director of Puppetry for War Horse) Darren Eedens and more! Oh yeah…it’s free and there’s a bouncy castle!
Theatre Beyond Walls is venturing out into our city to find, share and develop Toronto’s stories; ones that explore social justice, sustainability, and the culture in our city. Join us this fall as we share your stories.
