The Next Stage Theatre Festival (NSTF) presented by The Toronto Fringe is pleased to announce that it had one of its most successful festivals to date! Over 7,200 people came through the doors of the Factory Theatre, purchasing $77,000 worth of tickets! Patrons enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of our cosy beer tent, and took in repeat performances of the ten NSTF productions!
Our top sellers include Memorial, by Steven Gallagher which “...evoke[d] laughter and tears” (NOW Magazine, Jon Kaplan); With Love and A Major Organ, by Julia Lederer which was called “...a quirky comedy...” (Jordan Bimm, NOW Magazine); The Peace Maker, which earned accolades for playwright Natasha Greenblatt whose work was described as being able to “...get you laughing in your seats while being continuously moved” (Mooney on Theatre, Samantha Wu); and our two shows held in the Antechamber Liza Live! written and performed by tribute artist and vocalist Jennifer Walls which “...resonate[d] with high energy and powerful songs...” (Jon Kaplan, NOW Magazine); and pitch perfect Pitch Blond written and performed by Laura Anne Harris, which earned praise for her performance and was called a“...fascinating and startling transformation...” (George Perry, Mooney on Theatre).
Praise was earned for audience favourites like Sudden Death by Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman which featured a “...terrific Tony Nappo [whose] performance keeps you in a headlock.” (Martin Morrow, The Grid); Post Eden written and directed by Jordan Tannahill was considered to have created a “...achingly honest and unadorned script...” (J. Kelly Nestruck, Globe & Mail); Awake created and directed by Chris Tolley and Laura Mullin received 4 out of 4 stars (Toronto Star, Robert Crew); Salt Baby by Falen Johnson was “...highly recommended” (Mooney on Theatre, Dorianne Emmerton); and finally the improve comedy piece Throne of Games “...boast[ed] a generous cast of Toronto’s best comedic minds” (Mooney on Theatre, Lauren Stein).

The Next Stage Theatre Festival (NSTF) is Toronto’s premiere winter theatre event featuring work by veteran Canadian theatre artists and the hottest emerging talent in our city. Produced by The Toronto Fringe, this year’s 12 day festival showcased a thrilling variety of theatre from drama to comedy, and musical theatre to a multimedia “live-film” production. This year’s line-up included 10 productions whose actors, directors and playwrights have been recognized by many prestigious awards including a total of 11 Dora Award Nominations, Canadian Comedy Awards, a Governor General’s Award for Drama, and many more.
