Toronto, ON – January 17, 2013: Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today released details about Soulpepper's season opener, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Tom Stoppard's dramatic and witty adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet follows Rosencrantz and Guildenstern on their journey into Elsinore and beyond, and reveals the questioning nature of two previously under-examined players. Performed in the round, the show will run from February 7 to March 2 at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. Opening night is February 13.
In this absurdist comedy, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern appear in the same scenes as in Hamlet: they meet the King and Queen; question the prince; watch a play; discover a murder; and set sail for England. But they also live, argue, wager, and wait, in between Shakespeare's scenes, flipping coins, discussing their task, and pondering an existential crisis that threatens to rival Hamlet's. Soulpepper's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead features: Founding Member Ted Dykstra as Rosencrantz and Jordan Pettle as Guildenstern; Founding Members Diego Matamoros, Nancy Palk and William Webster; and Oliver Dennis, Leah Doz, Gregory Prest, Peyson Rock, Paolo Santalucia, Kenneth Welsh, Daniel Williston and Tim Ziegler. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is directed by Founding Member Joseph Ziegler.
