Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) proudly announces, in association with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Steven Bush and Mosaic Press, the launch of CONVERSATIONS WITH GEORGE LUSCOMBE: Steven Bush in conversation with the Canadian theatre visionary on Monday February 4, 7:00pm, in Tallulah’s Cabaret at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
The launch will be hosted by Buddies’ Artistic Director Brendan Healy. Special guests sharing the stage with co-author Steven Bush include veteran Luscombe performers Maja Ardal, Calvin Butler and Cedric Smith.
CONVERSATIONS WITH GEORGE LUSCOMBE is George in his own words – talking about actor training and the development of ensemble, about citizenship and politics, about the relationship between boards and artists and about “the joy of living in your own experience”. The book includes some 35 photographs, index, reading list, as well as tributes from Steven Bush, Alan Filewod, Ken Gass and Urjo Kareda and a specially-written preface by R.H. Thomson. A 70-minute audio CD with highlights of the original conversations is also enclosed with every book.
From the late 1950s, George Luscombe was at the creative centre of theatre in Toronto. As Director of Toronto Workshop Productions (TWP), George’s visual creativity, his exciting use of stage space and his ensemble approach to acting inspired Canadian theatre for three decades, and beyond. His legacy is carried on in the work of every theatre and every artist not afraid to take a stand on crucial issues of the day. “We are especially pleased that the book will be launched at 12 Alexander Street which was the home of TWP where George and his collaborators worked from 1967 to 1988,” said Steven Bush, “and which has continued, under the Buddies banner, to produce challenging, committed and boldly theatrical work since 1993.” As George once said: “A theatre without opinion is not a theatre.”
Co-author Steven Bush will be on hand to sign copies of the book immediately after the launch event.
