Toronto, ON - January 8, 2013: Albert Schultz, General Director of the Young Centre for the Performing Arts and Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced the details of Winter at the Young, four original works by some of Canada's most exciting and diverse theatre artists. "This city is full of an extraordinary array of artistic expression," said Schultz. "Over the last year I was fortunate to see hundreds of performances that, due to the ephemeral nature of live performance, were not seen by nearly as many people as they deserved. Winter at the Young is a chance to see four of the most remarkable shows of the last year. Each of these original Canadian shows moved me so deeply in very different ways. RARE for its courage and heart, Spent for its virtuosity and invention, pomme for its originality and humour, and Brent Carver because he is simply the very best." Tickets and details are available at youngcentre.ca.
RARE
RARE is a raw and boldly emotional piece of theatre in which nine performers with Down syndrome reveal themselves for the world to see. Created and directed by playwright Judith Thompson, with the cast writing most of their own material, the RARE artists lift the mask of Down syndrome to show us their humour, their grace, their rage and their dreams. It was a hit, and a Patrons' Pick, at last year's Toronto Fringe Festival. RARE is written and performed by Sarah Carney, Dylan Harman, James Hazlett, Nick Herd, Suzanne Love, Mike Liu, Nada Mayla, Krystal Nausbaum, and Andreas Prinz, with musician Victoria Carr. RARE is produced by Madeleine Greey and Nick Hutcheson of Diverse Creations. Jan. 28 - Feb. 7. Tickets range from $20 - $30; $15 for students (inclusive).
SPENT
Performed by Ravi Jain and Adam Paolozza, Spent is a two-person comedy highly acclaimed for its fast-paced, intelligent and poetic commentary on the greed that caused recent financial crises. Jain and Paolozza play 20 characters from around the world in this physical and comedic tour de force. A 2010 Dora Award-winner and a hit at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Spent is directed by Dean Gilmour and Michele Smith, and created by Dean Gilmour, Michele Smith, Ravi Jain and Adam Paolozza and was originally produced by Theatre Smith-Gilmour, TheatreRUN and Why Not Theatre. Feb. 12 - 14, 16, 21, 22. Tickets range from $20 - $30; $15 for students (inclusive).
BRENT CARVER
Sensational Tony Award-winning actor/singer Brent Carver will present a series of cabaret performances, accompanied by his longtime musical collaborator Laura Burton on piano, with violinist Anna Atkinson and cellist George Meanwell. Returning by popular demand after his sold-out appearances at last year's Global Cabaret Festival, Carver will demonstrate his incredible range in the intimate Michael Young Theatre. Revered for his ability to transfix and transport audiences, Carver will bring humour, pathos and his immediacy of delivery to repertoire ranging from Leonard Cohen's "Take This Waltz" to The Searchers' "Love Potion No. 9." Feb. 15 - 17, 23, 24; March 2, 3. Tickets range from $30 - $40; $20 for students (inclusive).
pomme is french for apple
First workshopped at the Young Centre before winning Patrons' Pick and Best of Fringe at the 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival, pomme is french for apple is a fresh, funny, and irreverent look at womanhood in all its glory: its perils, its pleasures and all kinds of madness in between. Comprised of a fast-paced series of vignettes, the show is a vaudevillian and distinctly West Indian exploration of the absurdity of women's lives in settings as diverse as the islands, downtown Toronto and southeast London. pomme is french for apple is created and performed by Liza Paul and Bahia Watson, recipients of the 2012 RBC Footprint Award, presented by Obsidian Theatre, for their contribution to the arts. Feb. 28; March 1, 8, 9. Tickets range from $20 - $30; $15 for students (inclusive).
Tickets are available by calling the Young Centre box office at 416.866.8666 or by visiting youngcentre.ca. The Young Centre for the Performing Arts is located at 50 Tank House Lane, in the Distillery Historic District, Toronto, ON. Tickets for RARE, Spent and pomme is french for apple range from $20 - $30; $15 for students (inclusive). Tickets for Brent Carver range from $30 - $40; $20 for students (inclusive).
