What do a giant joy-stick, a giant eye-ball and a giant ear have in common? They represent our chosen "fear of the year", our Fear of Drones. Over the next three weeks, these and other massive Drone effigies will be carefully and enthusiastically constructed by a host of volunteers, aficionados, and Clay & Paper Theatre master mask and giant-puppet builders. You can help! Adults, youth, and courageous children are invited to help us build masks, puppets, imagery and shrines, which we will parade through the streets together during the event. Participation is free, and there is no experience necessary. Drop by one of our workshops (more information below), or contact us via www.clayandpapertheatre.org for other ways to get involved.
Drones. The very idea is controversial. There are arguments about the ethics of their use and deployment, arguments about their technical superiority, arguments about the circumstances of their use, and arguments about their collateral damage.
Most of these arguments avoid the larger issues: Is there ever a justification for war, at this point in the history of human cruelty? And what are the implications of drone warfare with respect to the Orwellian reality of snooping devises that can hear and see us individually and collectively, either by direct surveillance or data mining? Recent revelations from the courageous Julian Assange, Edward Snowden and others present incontrovertible evidence of decades of systemic collusion of military, political, industrial and advertising sectors -- and they only seem to increase the somnambulistic responses we all practice.
Come to Dufferin Grove Park for NIGHT OF DREAD on Saturday, October 26th to join our raucous parade and then return to the park to participate in the startling and macabre scenario that will encourage us to laugh at this fear, to sneer at it and its authors derisively, and even to laugh at death itself. Then we will eat pan de muerta (Mexican “bread of the dead”) together and sing lugubrious songs of death.
The interactive hour-long parade begins at 6pm. Admission is PWYC ($10 suggested) and all are welcome. The NIGHT OF DREAD procession will tour the neighborhood and then return to Dufferin Grove Park for further festivities, performances and songs.
