Toronto, ON- Elizabeth - Darcy: An Adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is receiving its first professional production at the Campbell House Museum, after a sold-out run at this year's Toronto Fringe Festival. This 75-minute two-woman romp is a great way to celebrate the bicentennial of Jane Austen’s beloved comedy of manners.
Toronto’s magnificent Regency museum, Campbell House, becomes a third actor in the production as the audience follows the action from room to room. Toronto's oldest historical building from the Town of York, Campbell House provides a timeless setting for this classic tale.
Elizabeth - Darcy features only two female cast members, Hallie Burt and Kate Werneburg. As Torontoist’s Steve Fisher wrote, “There’s obviously some gender bending, but we’ve seen both women deftly handle comedy before: Burt in 2011 Fringe hit Queen Bathroom Monologues, and Werneburg in her YouTube series, Letters of Complaint and Moments of Excellence.” In Elizabeth-Darcy, women really can do and be anything they want (including Mr. Darcy!).
This gender-bending version is more than just a sight gag. Elizabeth –Darcy remains true to the spirit of Austen’s novel, while playfully exploring the nature of love and gender both now and in 1813, when the novel was first published.
Tom Arthur Davis (award winning Mamoud, Toronto and NYC Fringe 2012) returns to direct, and actors Hallie Burt (John and Beatrice, The Queer Bathroom Monologues) and Kate Werneburg (The Centre of Everything Civilised, A Midwinter’s Dream Tale) reprise their roles.
Tickets are $20 and can be found at T.O. TIX, www.totix.ca or in person, Tues- Sat 12-6:30pm Yonge- Dundas Square, 1 Dundas St E, Toronto. Run dates for public performances are December 14th-22nd and 27th -29th with show times at 2pm or 8pm.
If you missed this comedic masterpiece at Fringe, don’t delay. Treat your friends and family to some good Holiday fun!
