Toronto – The Next Stage Theatre Festival (NSTF) is Toronto’s premiere winter theatre event. Presented by the Toronto Fringe, the mandate of NSTF is to offer past Fringe artists the opportunity to bring their work to a wider audience. These ten up-and-coming indie artists and companies will take one of Canada’s oldest theatre institutions by storm this January, transforming Factory Theatre into a hotbed of indie activity. The 2014 Next Stage Theatre Festival runs from January 8 – 19, 2014.
Programmed by a panel of indie theatre experts, all ten NSTF shows have been selected to showcase the sheer talent that exists within the incubator of the indie theatre community. This year NSTF is presenting ambitious work on an ambitious scale – as four of the shows have casts with more than ten actors. The Toronto Fringe is committed to keeping ticket prices low at NSTF, making it possible to see professional, cutting-edge theatre by artists on the brink of making it big for as low as $12-15.
This year, NSTF features Canadian premieres of star-packed musicals (A Misfortune, Killer Business – The Musical), boundary-pushing remounts of past Fringe hits (Jack Your Body, Release the Stars: The Ballad of Randy and Evi Quaid), brand new work from powerful female voices (On the Other Side of the World, Stencilboy and Other Portraits), risk-taking departures from veteran Fringe companies (Scheherazade, Rifles) and the return of our surprising and intimate antechamber series (Fatherly, Polar Opposites).
The Art:
A Misfortune: A star-packed new Canadian musical based on Chekhov, with Trish Lindström, Adam Brazier & more.
Fatherly: A poignant and hilarious solo show from a charismatic Fringe storyteller (Weaksauce/Tinfoil Dinosaur).
Jack Your Body: A high-energy multicultural street dance show that explores waacking, voguing and jacking.
Killer Business – The Musical: The premiere of a Canadian murder mystery musical starring David Keeley.
On the Other Side of the World: A touching multi-lingual play about Jewish refugees in Shanghai during WWII.
Polar Opposites: An absurdist mask play featuring two polar bears trapped on a melting iceberg.
Rifles: A powerhouse collaboration between Nicolas Billon and Praxis Theatre based on a little known Brecht piece.
Release the Stars: The show that brought Randy and Evi Quaid out of hiding – reworked from the 2012 Fringe hit.
Scheherazade: 1001 Nights meets Say Yes to the Dress in this ambitious step for Nobody’s Business Theatre.
Stencilboy and Other Portraits: A dystopian play where the boundaries between sex and creation are blurred.
