Toronto, ON (Monday, Nov. 4, 2013) - The Confederation Centre of the Arts is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014 and today announced the selection of its incoming artistic director, Theatre 20's Adam Brazier.
Beginning October 2014, Brazier will accept the torch from long-serving Charlottetown Festival Artistic Director Anne Allan, and launch a new era in the renowned history of the national arts centre. Brazier will join the Centre in a year-round capacity, marking the first time the Artistic Director position has been expanded beyond the festival. He will remain a Founding Artist and active member of Theatre 20's Artistic Board.
Brazier is a multi-award winning actor/director. Serving as Theatre 20's inaugural artistic director since 2009 and as Chair of the Artistic Board since 2012, he led the development of several new works, including the world premiere of Bloodless: The Trial of Burke and Hare, which was nominated for nine Dora Mavor Moore Awards. Brazier will remain as Artistic Chair until October 2014. "I will remain heavily involved with Theatre 20 while in my new position," said Brazier, "and I look forward to partnering both companies in the development and production of new Canadian musicals."
"On behalf of our chairman, board of directors, and staff, I am very excited to introduce Adam Brazier, and look forward to launching our next chapter in Canadian performing arts together," says Jessie Inman, CEO of Confederation Centre.
Theatre 20 Board Chair David Morris said, "I am thrilled about the new opportunities for both organizations - and we look forward to the wider, interprovincial reach both companies will now enjoy. We will miss Adam greatly in Toronto but expect many joint projects and activities to keep us working in close collaboration. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, Founding Artists and Artistic Board, we wish Adam and his family all the best."
"My family and I are excited to build upon the legacy of The Confederation Centre and to return to the Island," says Brazier, whose grandparents are from Summerside, and St. Peter's Bay, both on Prince Edward Island. "The Confederation Centre is entering its second half-century as a National Theatre and Canada's living memorial to the Fathers of Confederation, and I look forward to continuing that spirit of leadership by bringing in many brave new ideas and inspiring productions with a strong dedication to mandate."
In the coming year in Toronto before relocating to PEI, Brazier will oversee mentorship of Theatre 20's new crop of young performers in the 2013-14 Emerging Artist Ensemble, The Company We Keep Cabaret Series at Jazz Bistro (now extended into 2014 due to popular demand), as well as Theatre 20's Summer 2014 production of Sondheim and Furth's COMPANY.
