New York: The Metropolitan Opera has announced its 2013/14 season and Canadians feature prominently as directors, conductors and singers in nine of the company’s 26 productions.
The Met’s new production of Verdi’s Falstaff, premiering December 6, 2013, will be directed and co-lit by Robert Carsen. As this is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Teatro alla Scala, Milan; De Nederlandse Opera, Amsterdam; and the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto, we should expect to see it sometime in the near future.
In the Met’s new production of Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Die Fledermaus, premiering December 31, 2013, Jane Archibald will alternate with Christine Schäfer in the role of Adele.
In the Met’s premiere of Nico Muhly’s new opera Two Boys, premiering October 21, 2012, Judith Forst will create the role of Anne’s Mum.
On January 16, 2014, the Met brings back the late Anthony Minghella’s production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with sets by Michael Levine.
On February 26, 2014, the Met brings back its successful 18th-century opera pastiche The Enchanted Island with a libretto by Jeremy Sams inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Adrianna Churchman makes her Met debut as Miranda opposite the Neptune of Plácido Domingo.
The Met returns Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the repertory on October 11, 2013, in the production directed by Toronto resident Tim Albery and starring Jospeh Kaiser as Lysander.
On September 30, 2013, Sondra Radvanovsky, who makes her home in the Caledon Hills, will alternate with Angela Meade in the title role of Bellini’s Norma.
Radvanovsky will also share the title role of Puccini’s Tosca, premiering October 29, 2013, with Patricia Racette and Elisabete Matos.
The Met’s reprise of Dvořák’s Rusalka on January 23, 2014, will not only be conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin but feature John Relyea as Vodnik, the Water Sprite.
