As ideas go, this one may be genius.
That’s genius as in Criminal Genius, the next production on tap for Lyndesfarne Theatre Projects.
The theatre group is inviting students to spread the word about the production of the George F. Walker black comedy, which kicks off with preview performances Feb. 20 and 21 at the Seneca Queen Theatre. Opening night is Friday, Feb. 22
High school students who generate the most buzz and bring the most people to the theatre — parents are invited, too — have the chance to win a free theatre workshop and rental of the Seneca Queen for a school event. Theatre goes attending performances as a result of the word-of-mouth and social media campaign need only to let the box office know when they arrive at the show what school they have chosen to support.
Criminal Genius is R-rated and is restricted to people 17 and over.
High school students of age can also attend the show on their own and pay just $5 (with proper student I.D.) The eyeGO to the ARTS program offers a huge selection of performances at this great rate. www.eyego.org
Criminal Genius follows the antics of a dysfunctional father and son crime team Rolly and Stevie, who “don’t do violence”. They are hired to torch a restaurant by tough talking, criminal accomplice, ‘Shirl the Pearl’. After botching the job they end up in a Niagara motel where they hope to find solace only to be confronted by Phillie, the drunken motel manager. These desperate and absurd characters must come up with a plan to save themselves, and what follows is fast, furious and insanely funny. Hilarity meets horror as the play draws to its inevitable conclusion. It’s Quentin Tarantino meets Dumb & Dumber.
Tickets for Criminal Genius are $30, $20 for students and seniors All tickets to the charity previews for Project SHARE and AIDS Niagara are $20. For tickets, call the box office at 905-374-SHOW (7469) or visit lyndesfarnetheatreprojects.com.
