Offenbach, the father of operetta, and one his zaniest musicals return to the TOT stage after nearly 19 years. Indefatigable, the Paris master is reputed to have composed more than 100 works for the lyric stage. Wildly successful, he became rich, famous and imitated by giants such as Johann Strauss and Gilbert and Sullivan. His amazing list of world-wide hits includes ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD, LA BELLE HELENE, LA GRANDE DUCHESSE DU GEROLSTEIN, and LA PERCHOLE. His only opera, the unfinished TALES OF HOFFMANN is a standard in most opera houses across the world.
May 2, 3, 4 (8pm) and May 5 (2pm).
LA VIE PARISIENNE, or ‘Life in Paris’, became one of Offenbach's most popular operettas following its premiere at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris on 31 October 1866. With LA VIE PARISIENNE, Can-Can became a rage, satire took centre stage, outrageous plot twists were the norm while both aristocrats and commoners vigorously applauded the operetta’s joie de vivre.
Elizabeth DeGrazia, Lauren Segal, Jennifer Sullivan, Adam Fisher, Christopher Mayell, Stefan Fehr and Stuart Graham are ready to kick back for a whale of a time in a score filled with rhythmic madness, melodic invention and comedic verve. Indeed, nobility and bourgeoisie will mingle, dance and frolic in the best Parisian style. With TOT’s inimitable minimalism you will focus on the actor and the singer and the story line and the great joy of life Offenbach has in store for us.
And of course, there is the allure of the City of Lights itself! Imagine Pigalle, Maxim’s, La Tour Eifel, Montmartre, Palais Garnier, Les Champs- Elysees, and the Arc de Triomphe. Offenbach conjures a bit of it all and manages to create excitement even at the train station where our tourists first arrive for a taste of LA VIE PARISIENNE. You too will be there together wilth Metella, Bobinet, Raoul, the Baroness, Pauline, Gabrielle and even the wealthy Brazilian and his thrilling Can-Can.
