Adolescents who are at ease with the French language are invited to participate in a unique creative workshop with the writer and multidisciplinary artist Anne‑Marie Guilmaine. Her writing of a stage script will be inspired by their personalities and vision of the world. Project participants with then perform the piece in a public presentation.
Remember playing Connect the Dots?
You placed the tip of the pencil on the first dot and then moved on to the second dot and the third and so on, the image unfolding as you progressed, with the final drawing appearing after connecting the last dot.
An image unfolds as you connect the dots.
A portrait. A landscape. A whole new world.
The idea underlying the French Theatre project is to bring together young people from different backgrounds, to create a space where they can speak their minds and talk about who they are and the world they live in. What interests do you have in common? What makes you different? What do you dream about? What do you find perplexing or upsetting? I’ll be there to help you connect the dots as the structure of the play takes shape.
The Workshop Process
If taking part in this experiment intrigues you and you are accepted as a participant, you will be asked to attend a few get-togethers with the group. We’ll spend time together thinking and discussing, rising to the challenge. We’ll strive to excel, to do our best. You’ll be sharing aspects of your personality and teaching others about things you know, but also responding to current events and reacting to creative constraints. Question, action, reaction. Some of your opinions and ideas might be turned upside down. You might be surprised, dazzled, perplexed. Me too. The goal is to explore who we are and the life we live, to open up to other attitudes, other ways of seeing, of thinking, of living together. We will move forward by going back and forth between our individual selves and the world at large, between what we know and what is unknown and unfamiliar.
Based on what we come up with together, I will transform that human experience into an artistic event by portraying my version of the “drawing” you have sketched, through my eyes as a creative artist. The play script will reflect what you have shared – a collection of identities, points of view, strong emotions and convictions. Then it will be up to you to give it voice. You and the other participants will perform the text in front of an audience in an informal presentation.
