April 16, 2013 Cahoots Theatre Company presents Sister Mary's a Dyke?! at Aki Studio Theatre, Daniels Spectrum, May 25-June 16, 2013.
Directed by Nina Lee Aquino, Sister Mary's A Dyke?! follows Abby (played by Flerida Peña), a pious and naive teenager, whose first day at the Crown of Thrones Academy sends her on a quest beyond the walls of her all-girl's school to the grounds of St. Peter's Square. It's a tender coming-of-age-and-out-of-the-closet story with a wicked mission impossible twist. You can bet that Jesus is guiding the way on this rip-roaring, atypical adventure comedy!
"At once both reverent and irreverent, Sister Mary's a Dyke?! asks some hard questions about sexuality and the church. Although, when posed by our hero, Abby, her naivete and charm make those hard-to-ask questions pretty easy to swallow. Flerida, who plays this role to perfection, is a brave, young artist that we are proud to support. Along with the experienced direction of the Nina Lee Aquino and her brilliant creative team, this one-woman tour-de-force is exactly what Cahoots is known for - culturally significant, provocative work. I am thrilled that Cahoots will be bringing this new, adventure comedy to life!" (Kawa Ada, Interim Artistic Director Cahoots Theatre)
Born out of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre's Young Creator's Unit and further developed by Carlos Bulosan Theatre, emerging, queer Filipino-Canadian playwright Flerida Peña grabs the Catholic church by the horns and turns it on its head.
As an emerging artist, Flerida Peña has been a part of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Pride Cab and Young Creators Unit, Carlos Bulosan Theatre’s Play Creation Unit and CLUTCH with the Kapisanan Arts Centre. She has appeared on stage with the wonderful women at the A.M.Y. Project and is also a member of Greasy Spooning Arts Collective, a diverse collection of queers committed to hosting shows, readings and other all-ages arts events for queer people and their allies with a politic of accessibility for all.
