Toronto, ON—A series of four concerts plus a fully staged opera forms the core of Soundstreams’ 2013/14 concert series. The events, which include several world premieres, feature celebrated Canadian artists performing alongside guests from Russia, Australia, Estonia and Latvia. In addition to two concerts held at the beautiful Koerner Hall, Soundstreams is excited to present events at two of Toronto’s most exciting new spaces: the acoustically revitalized Trinity St. Paul’s Centre and Ada Slaight Hall at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.
“Breathing new life into old but venerated forms infuses this season, whether it’s reimagining Flamenco or Bach, or an innovative staging of a new Canadian opera,” says Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney. “It’s what we do best – exploring the world’s most compelling and provocative new works – as interpreted by the finest Canadian and international artists, some old friends and some new.”
The season opens October 1, 2013 with The Music of Arvo Pärt at Koerner Hall, a concert showcasing two of the master composer’s recent choral and orchestral works conducted by Pärt’s long-time collaborator Tõnu Kaljuste. A world premiere by Riho Maimets is also featured, with performances by an exceptional line-up of artists including soprano Shannon Mercer and Choir 21.
The series continues with Reimagining Flameco at Trinity St. Paul’s Centre on November 13, 2013. In this concert, Russian guitar virtuoso Grisha Goryachev and pianist Serouj Kradjian bring contemporary perspectives to Andalusia’s age-old music of fire and passion, including the original chamber orchestra version of Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo and the world premiere of a new work by André Ristic.
On February 1 and 2, 2014, Ontario’s Elmer Iseler Singers, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and Alberta’s Pro Coro Canada come together for Canadian Choral Celebration, a weekend celebrating 60 years of professional choral singing in Canada. Following intimate concerts with the individual choirs on February 1, the festivities will culminate at Koerner Hall on February 2 with a performance of monumental works by Henryk Górecki, Thomas Tallis, and a world premiere for 64 voices by R. Murray Schafer.
Soundstreams celebrates Spring with an adventurous homage to Bach, Passion After St. Matthew, on April 15, 2014 at Trinity St. Paul’s Centre. A jazz and improvisation-infused Passion for the modern age, this concert features members of the acclaimed Australian Art Orchestra and an ensemble of brilliant Canadians including composer and sound artist Nicole Lizée.
The season concludes with a full presentation of Brian Current’s opera, Airline Icarus, running June 3 to 8, 2014 at Ada Slaight Hall in Daniels Spectrum. Set aboard a plane bound for Cleveland, the opera explores both the spiritual joy and angst of flying as it invites us into the minds of passengers and crew, revealing relationships and their innermost thoughts. Airline Icarus will be directed by English director Tim Albery, and features a cast that includes mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó and baritone Alexander Dobson.
“We’re elated to extend the Koerner Hall experience into new venues that offer unique possibilities for staging while retaining acoustic excellence in intimate settings,” says Executive Director Chris Lorway. “We are also excited to partner with Brian Current and his company Maniac Star to bring an exciting new dramatic work to the stage.”
