The Great Canadian Theatre Company in association with the County of Carleton Law Association with Ernst & Young as Title Sponsor is pleased to produce the 14th annual Lawyer Play Fundraiser. Judges and lawyers from Ottawa’s legal community will be starring in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre from May 8-11, 2013.
“The Ottawa legal community is proud to be a long-time supporter of GCTC through its Lawyer Play Fundraiser.” Mitch Charness & Carol Cochrane - Lawyer Play Committee
For the past 14 years, members of Ottawa’s legal community (seasoned lawyers, Judges, Masters and politicians as well as promising newcomers) have volunteered to perform in this annual fundraiser.
Charity partner for 2013:
Since 1999, the Lawyer Play fundraiser has raised money for GCCTC’s productions and charity partners. Each year, a worthy charitable organization is selected by the Lawyer Play Committee to receive a portion of the proceeds from the event. In recent years, the charity partners have been the Lawyers’ Zambia School Project, Operation Come Home, Nelson House and the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa-Carleton.
The 2013 charity partner is the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa. YSB offers a range of services to support and empower high-risk young people in Ottawa’s communities. This past winter, YSB rallied Mayor Jim Watson, Police Chief Charles Bordeleau and other community leaders to camp outside to raise awareness about young people on the streets.
Cameo appearances:
There will be two walk-on cameo roles each evening played by community VIP’s.
Wednesday, May 8 – Preview - Ken Gillespie and Judith Allen
Thursday, May 9- Councillor Katherine Hobbs & Justice Charles Hackland
Friday, May 10- The Honourable Louise Charron, CC & Councillor Mark Taylor
Saturday, May 11- The Honourable Sheila Copps & The Honourable Yasir Naqvi
About the play:
This humorous Broadway favorite tackles the delicate matter of morality in the race for a place on the ballot. Two men in 60's Philadelphia are vying for their party’s nomination for President at the party convention. How far will they bend their principles to get the nomination? William Russell is an eccentric academic struggling with the age-old question of right and wrong. His principal opponent, Joseph Cantwell, is the embodiment of all things underhanded. It's an inside look at the dirt-digging, double-dealing, triple-crossing chicanery of presidential electioneering.
The play is directed by CAO Award-winner, Patrick Gauthier. Stage Managed by Chantal Hayman. Set, Props and Costume Design by Sarah Waghorn. Lighting Design by Guillaume Houët and Sound Design by AL Connors. Assistant Stage Manager is Jacki Brabazon.
Ticket information:
Tickets for the Gala evenings (May 9, 10, 11) are $100 and include a post-show reception and a $50 tax receipt. Tickets for the Preview performance on May 8 are $35. Tickets are available through any cast member or at the GCTC Box Office by calling 613-236-5196 or online at www.gctc.ca.
