Toronto, ON (April 8, 2013) – Join the Winterreise Collective on Saturday May 4, 8pm for a compelling and insightful look into the collaborative process of theatre making. Winterreise Projekt is a multi-disciplinary exploration of Canada, its people and the relationship between winter and the Canadian identity through the themes of Franz Schubert’s celebrated song cycle “Winterreise”.
Schubert’s original “Winterreise”(Winter’s Journey) is one of the cornerstones of the classical art song canon. Winterreise Projekt re-envisions Schubert’s 1828 iconic masterpiece through the eyes of contemporary Canadian artists of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Part concert, part play, part dance and part memoir, Winterreise Projekt weaves the classic and the contemporary, the public and the private, into a distinctly Canadian tapestry of winter.
On Saturday May 4, the Winterreise Collective will hold an open work session that will allow the audience a rare glimpse into the creation of this new theatrical project. The public is invited to respond to, contribute to, and ultimately immerse itself in the collaborative process with the creators.
The Winterreise Collective is comprised of diverse and acclaimed artists spanning several disciplines including theatre, dance and music. Brought together by a desire for design-driven, collaborative storytelling, the collective seeks to create relevant works that probe and deconstruct our distinct Canadian diaspora communities and their pasts through a contemporary lens. The collective members are: multidisciplinary artists Kawa Ada, Derek Kwan and Hazel Venzon, Dora award-winning director Nina Lee Aquino, composer Kong Kie Njo, and multi-award winning designers Camelia Koo and Michelle Ramsay. This is the first collaboration between this group of artists as a collective.
