TORONTO, ON...Tapestry, Canada’s leading new opera company, announced today that the company is postponing the Toronto premiere of Shelter, originally scheduled for June 2013, to 2014. At the same time, Tapestry is launching a new fundraising campaign, “Opera Unites Us”, in support of its planned future artistic and educational endeavours.
Earlier this season Tapestry presented the world premiere of Shelter, by composer Juliet Palmer and librettist Julie Salverson, as a co-production with Edmonton Opera, where it enjoyed a critically acclaimed run. The postponement of the Toronto premiere of Shelter will allow the organization the time to secure sufficient financial backing before it proceeds with the production.
“Tapestry has enjoyed a long and fruitful creative history, and has worked hard to stretch each dollar,” said Helen Findlay, Tapestry Board Chairperson. “New opera is expensive to produce, and in these challenging economic times, fundraising presents new challenges for many arts organizations. The board has every confidence in a bright future for Tapestry and sees enormous value in the company’s ongoing programming. We hope this announcement will be a rallying cry for the supporters of new opera creation and education.”
“We wish to thank all the talented artists involved in the production of Shelter. The launch of this new fundraising initiative is an opportunity for the whole community to unite with us in the support of the creation of new opera and the wonderful artists who perform it,” said Tapestry’s Artistic Director & CEO Wayne Strongman.
Tapestry will contact all Shelter ticket holders directly; they will have the option of a refund or giving a tax-deductible donation in the amount of the tickets.
Tapestry’s new campaign is targeting $100,000 by June 30th, 2013. To learn more about Tapestry’s “Opera Unites Us” fundraising campaign please visit www.tapestryopera.com/unite or call 416-537-6066 x225.

Tickets are $29 and can be purchased online at www.tapestryopera.com/tickets or by calling 416-537-6066 x225.
