GCTC is pleased to present the world premiere of Like Wolves by Rosa Laborde. Like Wolves is a humorous and heart-felt play about life choices, family and fulfillment. The ensemble cast stars Nancy Beatty as Vera, Peter Froehlich as Sam, Matthew Edison as Tom, Kimwun Perehinec as Mia, Alix Sideris as Nina and John Koensgen as Yuri.
“Rosa Laborde is one of Ottawa’s own and is a playwright of great depth and humour,” says Artistic Director Eric Coates. “We are very proud of GCTC's role in the birth of her latest work. We have supported the play from the beginning to its world premiere."
Ms. Laborde began writing Like Wolves on the train during her commute between Ottawa and Toronto while her play Leo was being produced by GCTC in 2007. Laborde continued to develop and workshop the production during her year as GCTC’s writer- in-residence and beyond. The play was inspired by Laborde’s chance meeting with a guest at a wedding who, while reminiscing, concluded she hadn’t realized her own potential. Laborde built a story around the family of an elderly couple – Vera and Sam – who may or may not have accepted that they have lived life to its fullest.
About the play:
Sam and Vera are celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary. Sam has surprised Vera by bringing her back to the spot of their rural honeymoon. Now it’s a high-rise surrounded by parking lots and software buildings. Vera is shocked to discover that the once charming bed and breakfast has transformed into the last place on earth she wants to be. When Sam has an unexpected heart attack, Vera finds herself hopelessly stuck. A strange visitor and the arrival of her two less than helpful daughters leave her re-evaluating her life and family. Like Wolves is a riveting black comedy about marriage, dreams, and choices in these modern times. *

The Fritzi Gallery:
The work on the walls reflects the artist’s impression and emotional response to the play. The exhibition, Fragments of Nostalgia by artist Reid McLachlan is inspired by Rosa Laborde’s Like Wolves and is curated by Don Monet of CUBE Gallery.
The themes for these drawings are of aging, memory and technology through old objects. Most of these artifacts belonged to his late grandfather, a farmer from Muskoka. McLachlan focuses on certain parts of the subject and leaves other areas blank or lightly sketched in, highlighting the idea of fading memory and a loss of recognition of purpose.
“This loss can be experienced by the older generation as part of the natural aging process, and by the younger generations who lose the vast wisdom, knowledge and abilities of their elders. I like to think that in documenting my grandfather's belongings I capture the weight of the labour, sweat and love that they still carry and yet also address the inexorable fading of these qualities and memories,” says McLachlan.
The themes of aging, memory and family dovetail with those in Like Wolves. “I also pick up on the playwright's ideas of the perils of obsolescence in our hyper-disposable culture and the inevitable fact that, just like us, these objects will eventually end up incinerated or thrown into a hole somewhere.”
The vernissage for Fragments of Nostalgia is Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
