Ecce Homo is at the cutting-edge of queer theatre in our city. They have been tirelessly presenting aesthetically arresting, intellectually rigorous theatre at festivals in Toronto for many years, tackling big ideas with flair and garnering quite a following within our city's independent theatre community. We've been thrilled to have Ecce Homo developing this show through our Artist Residency Program since 2010.
This is a show ostensibly about that infamous mother monster, Lady Gaga – but it is, in fact, so much more than the jukebox musical you might expect. It is a frank examination of how we, all of us, perform our identities, how we consume our culture, and how we participate in the cult of celebrity. It is a crash course in the giants of contemporary art and ideas whose shoulders we all stand upon – featuring everyone from Cher to Andy Warhol to Camille Paglia – reminding us that we are nothing if not those who came before us.
This show is many things for us. It is the first musical our company has developed in quite some time. It is an exciting inter-generational partnership between two queer theatre companies. It is the latest in a wave of home-grown projects, nurtured over many years in our Residency Program, that are the essence and the future of Buddies – artistically rigorous, fiercely intellectual theatre that represents the very best our city has to offer.
