After 30 years of writing, conceptualizing, developing, directing and producing a body of work that is unmatched in Canadian theatre history, Playwright/ Director Michael Hollingsworth makes his Ottawa debut. The VideoCabaret Ensemble heads directly from Toronto to the nation’s capital for the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, where The War of 1812 will be showcased from June 7 to 15, at the Arts Court Theatre.
Since 1985, Hollingsworth and his VideoCabaret collaborators have created twenty-one celebrated plays, collectively known as THE HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE OF THE SMALL HUTS, which chronicle Canada’s history from Donnacona and Cartier, through to Brian Mulroney and Bush the First. The works are praised in equal parts for trenchant writing, virtuoso performances, spectacular design, and distinct style of staging. The War of 1812 is the first of these celebrated, uniquely Canadian plays to play Ottawa.

PRAISE FOR THE WAR OF 1812
"A knockout ... The writing (by Michael Hollingsworth) is pungent, the staging
(also by Hollingsworth) is brilliant, the set and lighting (Andy Moro) are superbly
precise and economic, the costumes (Astrid Janson) are even more superbly garish."
-National Post
"A rollicking, radical, rambunctious retelling of the history of Canada ... a stunning achievement ... I've seen nothing quite like [their approach] in many years of theatre-going ... do yourself a favour, old chum.
Come to the VideoCabaret."
-The Star
"Marvelously mischievous..." -Globe & Mail
"Michael Hollingsworth's viciously funny lampoon of our country's only armed conflict with its southern neighbour ... If you've never seen a play in the Small Huts cycle, this is a rip-roaring introduction."
-Grid
“Visually stunning and endlessly funny … NNNN”
-NOW
"A cross between Spitting Image and Bertolt Brecht ... a rollicking good ride."
-American Conservative
