Toronto, ON – Cahoots Theatre Company is pleased to announce the appointment of Marjorie Chan as its new Artistic Director. Marjorie Chan will commence her new role at Cahoots Theatre Company on July 8, 2013.
A Committee led by Cahoots’ Board members Derrick Chua and Dale Yim, and including director Yvette Nolan and Cahoots’ General Manager, Kate Ann Vandermeer, conducted a national search and review of applicants.
“We are thrilled to have such an experienced and esteemed member of the arts community as Marjorie on hand to lead our company into its twenty-seventh year”, says Michelle Yeung, Chair of Cahoots’ Board of Directors.
“The depth of Marjorie’s connection to Cahoots, her stature as an artist nationally, her commitment to developing the voices of young people in the theatre, make her an exciting choice for both Cahoots and Canadian theatre”, said Nolan.
Marjorie Chan is an established playwright, performer, director and dramaturge. She has an extensive and intimate knowledge of the Toronto theatre community, is an acclaimed artist nationally and internationally, has a long history with the company and a profound understanding of Cahoots’ mandate. This expertise and familiarity with the company, combined with her passion for providing opportunities and inspiration to underrepresented voices, provides a strong foundation for the future trajectory of the company.
“Since graduating from theatre school over 15 years ago, Cahoots has supported me as an emerging actor, later as a playwright, later still as an administrator, and youth facilitator”, says Marjorie Chan. “The truth is my career has been undeniably shaped by the consistent support of this organization over the years. It is a 26 year legacy of culturally diverse theatre I am proud to uphold and honoured to continue.”

After a significant renovation, Cahoots re-opened the doors to its office and rehearsal space and has already been able to provide numerous artists from the community with access to an affordable and barrier-free advanced creation studio. Cahoots’ world premiere production of Flerida Peña’s Sister Mary’s a Dyke is playing at the Aki Studio Theatre, Daniels Spectrum until June 16, 2013.
