Toronto playwright is in London, UK, where he is spending the summer as a member of the Royal Court Theatre's Young Writers Programme.
His debut poetry collection, Hungry, was published this spring by Cormorant Books. Learn more about and purchase the book by clicking here. Karasik will appear at the Cormorant poetry launch next Thursday night, the 20th, 6 PM at Toronto's Paupers Pub.
One day earlier, on Wednesday, June 19th, Karasik’s new play The Schwartz Bride will receive a public reading as part of the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company's In The Beginning playwriting festival.
Directed by recent Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award of Excellence winner Alan Dilworth, the show will play at 7:30 PM at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Tickets are free and can be reserved by calling 416-932-9995, x221.
In other news, Little Death, Karasik’s newest play (in verse), will receive a workshop reading at Tarragon Theatre next week. Stay tuned for more news about this exciting project...
Karasik’s play The Biographer, which Tango Co. produced in May, has been nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play! Sound designer/composer Thomas Ryder Payne has also been recognized with a nomination for his evocative soundscape. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Toronto's Bluma Appel Theatre on June 24th.
At 12:30 PM on Saturday, June 22nd, Karasik will be reading from Hungry in Trinity Bellwoods Park as part of the Luminato Festival's Literary Picnic (weather permitting; the rain date is Sunday, June 23rd), alongside fantastic authors such as Grace O'Connell, Robert Rotenberg, Michael Winter, Martha Schabas, and Ayelet Tsabari.
Last but not least, Karasik is one of three finalists for this year's Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award. The winner will be announced at the Mayor's Arts Lunch on June 27th, at which not a single joke will be made about Toronto’s mayor.
